James McCloughan

John Specialist 5 McCloughan was raised in the rural area of Bangor,
Michigan. Drafted into the US Army in 1968, McCloughan served as
a combat medic with the Americal Division.
A highly decorated veteran, Specialist McCloughan has received
the Combat Medical Badge, two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star with
Oak Leaf Cluster and “V” device for valor, the US Army Valorous
Unit Citation and several other accolades for his service in
the Vietnam War.
In 2017 he was recognized with the Congressional Medal of Honor.
After returning home in 1970, McCloughan taught at South Haven
High School for 38 years. In addition to teaching psychology
and sociology, he coached football, wrestling, and baseball and
was inducted into three Michigan coaching Halls of Fame.
Since retirement, McCloughan has remained dedicated to his
community as a member of nonprofit organizations and has served
on multiple charitable projects. Representing the Medal of Honor,
he speaks across the country. McCloughan and his wife Chérie,
still reside in South Haven and have four adult children and
seven grandchildren.
* The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action
against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon an individual
serving in the Armed Services of the United States.
