D.O.V.E. Fund Supports Schools for the Blind in
Vietnam
Located
in the provincial capital of Hue, the D.O.V.E. Fund
has helped fund a number of projects for the Hue
School for the Blind. Students of all ages
attend this school and many live in small, onsite
dormitories.

D.O.V.E. Fund donors have provided not only
scholarships and financial aid to teachers, but a
critically important Braille printer went online
last year. The new printer is capable of
producing educational material for the blind
throughout central Vietnam. These Braille textbooks
can provide learning opportunities for hundreds of
students who would struggle without them. Computers
and software with special capabilities for the
visually impaired were also provided by generous
donors. The students in the Hue school include
children who learn to sing and study music along
with traditional Vietnamese dance. Recently
added to the curriculum are classes in homemaking
crafts and massage therapy.

Sight impaired Veteran Raises Funds to Build School
The
road leading north from Hue leads to the hamlet of
Cam Lo. The site of bitter fighting during the war,
Cam Lo has emerged as a quiet farming community that
is home to the Cam Lo School for the Blind. In 2006,
Minnesota businessman, and D.O.V.E. Fund member,
Mark Sathe, who was visually impaired himself,
decided to raise funds to build a vocational school
to help some of the blind people who live nearby.

Mark lost his battle with cancer two years ago, but
his wife Ginny made the trip to Cam Lo in 2010 to
see the realization of Mark's dream. After
meeting the students and teachers, Ginny commented
"This school is playing such a vital role in helping
people learn critical skills while building a sense
of self-worth, I know Mark would be proud."

Five
years after Mark Sathe's fund raising efforts, a
beautiful new school stands in the middle of a
crowded block of small buildings. Once again the
persistance of a caring American reaps reward.
