D.O.V.E. Fund returns to Vietnam in 2012

The Mission  Continues....              Christmas Tree

Having returned from another successful mission trip a couple of months ago, plans are taking shape for a fruitful March 2012 mission to visit our friends and bring help to the neediest people in Vietnam.

With the help of Trustee, Do Nguyen and Vice Chair of Vietnam projects, Fred Grimm, who are in regular contact with provincial officials in Vietnam, The D.O.V.E. Fund will again traverse the country from Hanoi to Saigon with many stops in between. In-country Vietnam representative, Cam Nhung, will again play a key role in coordinating our efforts and be alongside us during our stay in Hue and nearby Quang Tri province

.

After landing in the capitol city of Vietnam, Hanoi, D.O.V.E. Fund reps will meet with government officials in charge of coordinating NGO (non-governmental organization) activity in the country. The D.O.V.E. Fund works closely with these officials as our due diligence to determine where our humanitarian efforts are most needed and will yield the best results.

Ha Long Bay and the City of Hue

After a night in Hanoi, the group will travel east for an overnight stay in beautiful Ha Long Bay to view the striking limestone formations jutting up out of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Then it's on to the old imperial city of Hue, now the capital of Thua Thien province and formerly the capital of Vietnam until 1945.  Hard hit during the war, many of the people in the outlying areas are still in great need.  Hue will serve as base of operations for a few days while the D.O.V.E. contingent reviews and consults on various projects specific to the area.

On to "Roads Less Traveled"

After Hue, the group will travel south of Da Nang and spend 3 days in the ancient

town of Hoi An. After collecting items for the D.O.V.E. Dinner Auction scheduled for August 17, 2012, the contingent will enjoy the sun and sandy beach and sample

some of Vietnam's best cuisine in downtown Hoi An.

Traveling further south to the central highlands, the participants will land in the provincial capital of Dak Lak province, Ban Me Thuot to meet with the Department of Foreign Affairs officials. The next day, the travelers will journey to the Hoang Van Thu junior high school deep in the highlands of Dak Lak; then it's off for a day in the beautiful, coastal town of Nha Trang.

School Visitations, Shopping, Scholarship Presentations

Staying in the central highlands, the group will move south to the city of Dalat, the provincial capital of Lam Dong province.  An historic city with French influences, Dalat is popular with tourists because of its temperate climate. Long an enclave of Vietnam's ethnic minorities, in 1968 Dalat also served as a base camp for former US soldier and D.O.V.E. Fund founding member, Bob Mehring.  Through a series of fund raisers and contributions from their friends after Bob's passing, Bob's wife Paula was able to fund a daycare center just outside Dalat in the Diom Hamlet - a long-time desire of Bob's.  Along with a visit with students and teachers at the Diom school is a side trip to the Tam Chau tea plantation and the Dam Ri waterfall.

Next the contingent will move south to Saigon, now known more formally as Ho Chi Minh City. An exciting, mysterious and cosmopolitan city with a rich history, Saigon is a key port city and the largest base of commerce in Vietnam.  The D.O.V.E. Fund has many contacts in HCMC and everyone will be busy with meetings, shopping and presenting scholarships to students at HCM Technical University.  It's also a good time for relaxing a bit before the long trip home.
